Prince’s Purple Rain is officially heading to Broadway, bringing the music and story of the landmark 1984 film to New York’s Majestic Theatre. The production announcement confirms that previews will begin March 12, 2027, followed by an official opening on April 12.
The Broadway plans follow the musical’s earlier run in Minneapolis, Prince’s hometown. The stage production will include more than 20 songs from his catalog, including When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U and The Beautiful Ones.
The story centers on The Kid, a young musician navigating family conflict, competition and romance while trying to establish himself in the Minneapolis music scene. It draws from the original film while adapting the material for a live theatrical setting.
Saheem Ali will direct the Broadway production, with a book by Peter Duchan and choreography by Ebony Williams. Jason Michael Webb will oversee the music, while longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes will serve as music advisers. Casting details have not yet been announced.
